NEET-UG to Shift Online: Nationwide CBT Infrastructure Strategy

APCCI News Update | September 30, 2026 | New Delhi

What's the update?

The Ministry of Education is developing a nationwide Computer-Based Testing (CBT) infrastructure strategy to transition the NEET-UG examination from its current pen-and-paper format to an online mode. Following recent paper leaks, this move aims to create a standardized, leak-proof system while addressing test-center availability and equity implications for rural and low-connectivity districts. The final migration plan currently awaits recommendations from the Nandan Nilekani-led task force, the Health Ministry, and the National Medical Commission.

What This Means for Career Counsellors

Prepare your medical aspirants for a potential transition from traditional pen-and-paper testing to a digital interface

Incorporate computer-based mock tests and digital time-management strategies into your preparation guidance

Monitor updates closely to guide rural candidates on the new multi-model sourcing architecture and test-center accessibility

Impact for Students

Candidates will need to adapt their exam strategies to navigate and perform effectively in a computer-based testing environment

The proposed nationwide infrastructure is designed to provide a secure, transparent, and leak-proof examination for the 25 lakh appearing candidates

Students from rural and low-connectivity districts are expected to benefit from the strategy's focus on closing geographic gaps in test-center availability

Important Dates

Expected Implementation: Next Year (Pending final task force recommendations)

Eligibility Criteria

No changes to current admission criteria; NEET-UG remains the mandatory gateway for over 1.08 lakh MBBS seats and allied courses
