Class Level: Up to Class XI Subject: Economics / Business Studies / Accountancy

๐Ÿงพ Introduction to Taxation

Definition: Taxation is the process by which a government collects money from individuals and businesses to fund public services and infrastructure.
Purpose of Taxes:
  • Build roads, schools, hospitals
  • Fund defense and law enforcement
  • Support welfare schemes and subsidies

๐Ÿ›️ Types of Taxes in India

India’s tax system is divided into two main categories:

1. Direct Taxes

These are taxes paid directly to the government by individuals or organizations.

  • Type of Direct Tax
  • Description
  • Income Tax
  • Paid by individuals and companies on their income
  • Corporate Tax
  • Paid by companies on their profits
  • Capital Gains Tax
  • Tax on profit from sale of assets like property or shares
  • Wealth Tax (now abolished)
  • Was levied on net wealth of individuals

Key Feature: The burden of tax and payment lies on the same person.

2. Indirect Taxes

These are taxes collected by intermediaries (like shops or service providers) and passed on to the government.

  • Type of Indirect Tax
  • Description
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • Unified tax on sale of goods and services across India
  • Customs Duty
  • Tax on imported goods
  • Excise Duty (mostly merged into GST)
  • Tax on production of goods within India

Key Feature: The person who pays the tax is not the one who bears its burden (e.g., consumers pay GST when buying goods).
