1. To introduce school students to all the 22 Indian Languages of Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India.

2. To enhance linguistic tolerance and respect, and promote national integration.

Suggested Activities

The 5 sentences pertaining to the language of the day should be read out e.g. Assamese on day 1, Bengali on day 2 etc., in the morning assembly, and students asked to repeat them. In case there is any student from that State, e.g. Assam on day 1, West Bengal on day 2 etc. or who speaks the language studying in the school, then he/she or even all of them should preferably read out the sentences in the morning assembly. Similarly, any teacher, parent, government servant or any other person from that State or who speaks the language, may be invited to read out the sentences. 2. Senior students may be encouraged to create posters on these sentences, these can be put up all over the school. 3. Teachers may address the students and converse with them in the language of the day, and encourage students to do the same. 4. Students may be encouraged to share these sentences with their families at home. 5. The schools may carry out other activities related to this initiative.

SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music And Culture Amongst Youth) is a non-political, nationwide, voluntary movement founded in 1977 by Dr Kiran Seth, Professor-Emeritus at IIT-Delhi who was awarded the ‘Padma Shri’ for his contribution to the arts in 2009.

SPICMACAY’s intention is to enrich the quality of formal education by increasing awareness about different aspects of Indian heritage and inspiring the young mind to imbibe the values embedded in it. It seeks to inspire youth through experiencing the mysticism embodied in the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry of Indian and World Heritage, with a hope that the beauty, grace, values and wisdom embodied in these arts will influence their way of life and thinking and inspire one to become a better human being. For this, the most accomplished artistes of the country render programmes of Indian classical music and dance, folk, poetry, theatre, traditional paintings, crafts & yog primarily in schools and colleges. In 2011, SPIC MACAY was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana award in recognition of its contribution to youth development.

In 2012-13, 7500+ programmes were organised in more than 1500 institutions in 800 towns in India and 50 towns abroad impacting more than 3 million students. All these programmes were organised by thousands of volunteers – largely students, teachers, housewives, retired people, professionals, young and old. SPIC MACAY celebrates Nishkaam Seva - the spirit of volunteerism – of giving selflessly without expectation, a value that is intrinsic to our culture and important to nurture in today's world.

यह दिवस भारत सरकार भारत के पहले शिक्षा मंत्री एवं भारत रत्न से सम्मानित मौलाना अबुल कलाम आज़ाद की याद में हर 11 नवंबर को मनाया जाता है। वैधानिक रूप से इसका प्रारम्भ 11 नवम्बर 2008 से किया गया है।

मौलाना अबुल कलाम आज़ाद या अबुल कलाम गुलाम मुहियुद्दीन (11 नवंबर,1888 - 22 फरवरी, 1958) एक प्रसिद्ध भारतीय मुस्लिम विद्वान थे। वे कवि, लेखक, पत्रकार और भारतीय स्वतंत्रता सेनानी थे। भारत की आजादी के वाद वे एक महत्त्वपूर्ण राजनीतिक रहे। वे महात्मा गांधी के सिद्धांतो का समर्थन करते थे।

उन्होंने हिंदू-मुस्लिम एकता के लिए कार्य किया, तथा वे अलग मुस्लिम राष्ट्र (पाकिस्तान) के सिद्धांत का विरोध करने वाले मुस्लिम नेताओ में से थे। खिलाफत आंदोलन में उनकी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही। 1923 में वे भारतीय नेशनल काग्रेंस के सबसे कम उम्र के प्रेसीडेंट बने।

वे 1940 और 1945 के बीच काग्रेंस के प्रेसीडेंट रहे। आजादी के वाद वे भारत के उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य के रामपुर जिले से 1952 में सांसद चुने गए और वे भारत के पहले शिक्षा मंत्री बने।

वे धारासन सत्याग्रह के अहम इन्कलाबी (क्रांतिकारी) थे। वे 1940-45 के बीट भारतीय राष्ट्रीय कांग्रेस के अध्यक्ष रहे जिस दौरान भारत छोड़ो आन्दोलन हुआ था। कांग्रेस के अन्य प्रमुख नेताओं की तरह उन्हें भी तीन साल जेल में बिताने पड़े थे। 

स्वतंत्रता के बाद वे भारत के पहले शिक्षा मंत्री बने और विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग की स्थापना में उनके सबसे अविस्मरणीय कार्यों में से एक था।

मौलाना आज़ाद अफग़ान उलेमाओं के ख़ानदान से ताल्लुक रखते थे जो बाबर के समय हेरात से भारत आए थे। उनकी माँ अरबी मूल की थीं और उनके पिता मोहम्मद खैरुद्दीन एक फारसी (ईरानी, नृजातीय रूप से) थे।

मोहम्मद खैरुद्दीन और उनके परिवार ने भारतीय स्वतंत्रता के पहले आन्दोलन के समय 1857 में कलकत्ता छोड़ कर मक्का चले गए। वहाँ पर मोहम्मद खॅरूद्दीन की मुलाकात अपनी होने वाली पत्नी से हुई। मोहम्मद खैरूद्दीन 1890 में भारत लौट गए। मौहम्मद खैरूद्दीन को कलकत्ता में एक मुस्लिम विद्वान के रूप में ख्याति मिली। 

जब आज़ाद मात्र 11 साल के थे तब उनकी माता का देहांत हो गया। उनकी आरंभिक शिक्षा इस्लामी तौर तरीकों से हुई। घर पर या मस्ज़िद में उन्हें उनके पिता तथा बाद में अन्य विद्वानों ने पढ़ाया। इस्लामी शिक्षा के अलावा उन्हें दर्शनशास्त्र, इतिहास तथा गणित की शिक्षा भी अन्य गुरुओं से मिली। आज़ाद ने उर्दू, फ़ारसी, हिन्दी, अरबीतथा अंग्रेजी़ भाषाओं में महारथ हासिल की। सोलह साल उन्हें वो सभी शिक्षा मिल गई थीं जो आमतौर पर 25 साल में मिला करती थी।

तेरह साल की आयु में उनका विवाह ज़ुलैखा बेग़म से हो गया। वे देवबन्दी विचारधारा के करीब थे और उन्होंने क़ुरान के अन्य भावरूपों पर लेख भी लिखे। आज़ाद ने अंग्रेज़ी समर्पित स्वाध्याय से सीखी और पाश्चात्य दर्शन को बहुत पढ़ा। उन्हें मुस्लिम पारम्परिक शिक्षा को रास नहीं आई और वे आधुनिक शिक्षावादी सर सैय्यद अहमद खाँ के विचारों से सहमत थे।
