NEET-UG to Shift Online: Nationwide CBT Infrastructure Strategy

APCCI News Update | September 30, 2026 | New Delhi

What's the update?

The Ministry of Education is developing a nationwide Computer-Based Testing (CBT) infrastructure strategy to transition the NEET-UG examination from its current pen-and-paper format to an online mode. Following recent paper leaks, this move aims to create a standardized, leak-proof system while addressing test-center availability and equity implications for rural and low-connectivity districts. The final migration plan currently awaits recommendations from the Nandan Nilekani-led task force, the Health Ministry, and the National Medical Commission.

What This Means for Career Counsellors

Prepare your medical aspirants for a potential transition from traditional pen-and-paper testing to a digital interface

Incorporate computer-based mock tests and digital time-management strategies into your preparation guidance

Monitor updates closely to guide rural candidates on the new multi-model sourcing architecture and test-center accessibility

Impact for Students

Candidates will need to adapt their exam strategies to navigate and perform effectively in a computer-based testing environment

The proposed nationwide infrastructure is designed to provide a secure, transparent, and leak-proof examination for the 25 lakh appearing candidates

Students from rural and low-connectivity districts are expected to benefit from the strategy's focus on closing geographic gaps in test-center availability

Important Dates

Expected Implementation: Next Year (Pending final task force recommendations)

Eligibility Criteria

SCHOOL INNOVATION COUNCIL

 School Innovation Council

Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell (MIC) has launched the School Innovation Council (SIC) program for schools across the country.

The Program aims at fostering the culture of Innovation, Ideation, Entrepreneurship, Creativity, and Design Thinking in Schools. SIC will promote out of box thinking in school education as envisioned in National Education Policy 2020.

This initiative is a major tool for the implementation of recently released National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Promotion Policy(NIEPP) for schools by the union ministry of Education.

The schools will have to conduct various activities for students and teachers under SIC annual calendar plan.

These activities will prepare the ground for Innovation, ideation, and prototype development contests at school, state and national levels. SIC will link schools with Innovation Councils established by MoE’s Innovation Cell at Higher Education Level to further provide exposure to school students.

The school principal has to register the School Innovation Council as per provisions of MIC given in SIC program guidelines below.

A leap to transform innovation landscape in Schools

Promote a learning environment where creativity, ideation, innovation, problem solving and entrepreneurship skills of students are nurtured.
