NDA

Recruitment of candidates to Army, Navy and Air force wings of the National Defence Academy (NDA), is through National Defence Academy Entrance Exam which is held twice a year, generally in the month of April and September. NDA exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). A candidate must be an unmarried male. The course of training is for three years.

NDA awards you a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Science or Computer Science on completion of your training. If you join the technical stream, you will be offered a Graduate and Post Graduate degree in Engineering from one of the finest institutes of technology in the country. If you are selected for the prestigious Defence Services Staff College course. You’ll be awarded a Master of Science degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. The Indian Army also runs some of the country’s most prestigious academies and institutes. This covers a wide range of subjects from engineering to medicine, administration to strategy, and armament technology to management. The choice is indeed limitless. In fact, you can even get into Research & Development, if you desire. That’s not all. You can also take a study leave amidst your tenure for an added educational qualification.

Candidates who desire to join Air Force Academy must indicate AFA as first choice, as they have to be administered pilot aptitude battery test at one of the AFSB and AF Medical at Central Medical Establishment/ Institute of Aviation Medicines.

Eligibility

(a) Nationality : 

A candidate must either be  :

1. a citizen of India, 

(b) Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status :

A candidate must be an unmarried male and have attained the age of 16 1/2 years and must not have attained the age 19 years on the 1st January or 1st of July of the year succeeding the year of examination.
Candidates must not marry until they complete their full training. A candidate who marries subsequent to the date of his application, though successful will not be selected for training.
A candidate who marries during training shall be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditure incurred on him by the Government.

(c) Educational Qualifications :

i) For Army wing of National Defence Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

ii)                  For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 (Executive Branch) Course at the Naval Academy :- 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equilvalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply.

(d) Physical Standards : Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination as per guidelines given .Candidates declared unfit during Appeal Medical Board will be intimated about the provision of Review Medical Board.

(a)  The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely in interfere  with the efficient performance of military duties.

(b)  There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or under weight.   The candidate should not be overweight or obese.

(c)   The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cms. (162.5 cms for Air Force) F

Note 1 : Height relaxable upto 2.5 cm (5 cm. for Navy) may be allowed where the Medical Board certifies that the candidate is likely to grow and come up to the required standard on completion of his training.

Note 2 : To meet special requirement as a pilot in the Air Force the acceptable measurements of leg length, thigh length and sitting height will be as under :–

On account of lower age of NDA candidates, a margin of upto 5.0 cm. in height, 2.5 cm. in leg length (minimum) and 1.0 cm. sitting height (minimum) may be given provided it is certified by the Medical Board that the candidate is likely to grow and come upto the required standard on completion of his training in NDA.

Chest should be well developed. Fully expanded chest should not be less than 81 cms.  The minimum range of expansion after full inspiration should be 5 cms. The measurement will be taken with a tape so adjusted that its lower edge should touch the nipple in front and the upper part of the tape should touch the lower angle of the shoulder blades behind. X-Ray of the chest is compulsory and will be taken to rule out any disease of the chest.

There should be no disease of bones and joints of the body. X-ray of spine of candidates will not be carried out as a routine except for Air Force. It will, however, be done on the advice of surgical specialist wherever clinically indicated. Minor congenital defects which are not likely to interfere in the performance of military duties may be acceptable on merit

Application

The UPSC have developed an application form common for all their examinations which can be processed on computerised machines. This application form along with an Information Brochure containing general instructions for filling up the form, an acknowledgement card and an envelope for sending the application will be obtainable from the designated Head Post Offices/ Post Offices throughout the country on payment of a requisite amount. Blank application forms and other particulars are published by UPSC in leading newspapers and Employment News in the month of March and September.

A candidate seeking admission must apply to The Secretary, UPSC, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi- 110069 on prescribed application form.

This form can be used only once and for only one examination. Since this form is electronically scanned, due care should be taken to fill up the application form, correctly. In case of any difficulty in getting the application forms from the designated post offices the candidates can contact the concerned post master or UPSC's "Forms Supply Monitoring Cell". Important : All communications to the Commission should invariably contain the following particulars.

1. Name and year of the examination.
2. Application Form No. (8 digit)
3. Roll No. (if Received)
4. Name of candidate in full and in Block Letters.
5. Postal Address as given in the Application.

Selection

Admission will be made on the results of the written examination to be conducted by the Commission followed by intelligence and personality test by the Services Selection Board of candidates who qualify in the written examination.

All the candidates will be put to stage one test on first day of reporting at Selection Centres/Air Force Selection Boards. Only those candidates who qualify at stage one will be admitted to the second stage/remaining tests.

Those candidates who qualify stage II will be required to submit the original Certificates along with one photocopy each of : (i) original Matriculation pass certificate or equivalent in support of date of birth; (ii) Original 10+2 pass certificate or equivalent in support of educational qualification.

Plan of the Examination

The examination comprises:
(i) Written Examination
(ii) Intelligence, obstacles and Group Tests by Services Selection Board of the candidates, who qualify the written examination.

Examination Subjects

The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks allotted to each subject will be as follows:

(a) For Admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy.

• The papers in all subjects will consist of OBJECTIVE-TYPE questions only.
• The question papers (Test Booklets) will be set in English only.

Interview : Those who qualify the written test, has to undergo an interview. The objective of the interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate. 

The maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be equal for each course i.e. the maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be 300,300,300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively.  

Intelligence and Personality Test : In addition to the interview, the candidates will be put to intelligence test of both verbal and non-verbal nature, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They also have to undergo group tests, such as group discussions, group-planning, outdoor group tasks and asked to give brief lecturers on specified subjects. All these tests are intended to judge the mental caliber of a candidate.

To be acceptable, candidates for the Army/Navy and Naval Academy should secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in (i) Written examination and (ii) Officer potentiality test, as fixed by the Commission in their discretion, and candidates for the Air Force should secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in (i) Written examination (ii) Officer potentiality test, and (iii) Pilot Aptitude Test as fixed by the Commission in their discretion.

N.B. : Every candidate for the Air Force is given Pilot Aptitude Test only once. The Grade secured by him at the first test will there-fore hold good for every subsequent interview he has with the Air Force Selection Board. A candidate who fails in the first Pilot Aptitude Test cannot apply for admission to the National Defence Academy Examination for the Air Force wing or General Duties (Pilot) Branch or Naval Air Arm.

Candidates who have been given the Pilot Aptitude Test for any previous N.D.A. course should submit their application for this examination for the Air Force Wing only if they have been notified as having qualified in the Pilot Aptitude Test.

Centres of examination : 

On each each, the examination  is held at various centres recommended. Candidates admitted to the examination will be informed of the time table and place or places of examination. The date of holding examination and centres may liable to be changed at the discretion of the Commission.

Near By Centres may be Jammu, Chandigarh, Shimla. 

Syllabus of NDA Exam

Paper I

Mathematics

Arithmetic:

Number Systems-Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental operations-addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots, decimal fractions.

Unitary method-time and distance, time and work. Percentage-applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.

Elementary Number Theory, Division algorithm Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorization Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M. Euclidean algorithm. Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms. 

Mensuration:

Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circles. Area of figures, which can be split up into these figures (Field Book). Surface area and volume of cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders. Surface area and volume of spheres.

Algebra:

Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. of polynomials. Solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficients (only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations to two unknown analytical and graphical solutions. 

Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable and their solutions. Set language and set notation. Rational expression and conditional identities. Law of indices.

Geometry: 

Lines and angles. Plane and plane figure. Theorems on
1. Properties of angles at a point
2. Parallel lines
3. Sides and angles of a triangle
4. Congruency of triangles
5. Similar triangles
6. Concurrence of medians and altitudes
7. Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square

9. Loci.
Trigonometry :
Sine x, Cosine x, Tangent x when 0° < x < 90°
Value of sin x, cos x and tan x for x = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°. Simple trigonometric identities.
Use of trigonometrical tables.
Simple cases of heights and distances.
Statistics:
Collection and tabulation of statistical data. Graphical representation, frequency polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts, etc. Calculation of mean of raw and grouped data.
Paper II
General Ability Test
Part A -English
The question paper in English will be designed to test the candidate's understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. The syllabus covers various aspects like: Grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended texts to test the candidate's proficiency in English.
Part B -General Knowledge
The question paper on General Knowledge will broadly cover the subjects: Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Social Studies, Geography and Current Events.
The syllabus given below is designed to indicate the scope of these subjects included in the paper. The topics mentioned are not to be regarded as exhaustive and questions on topics of similar nature not specifically mentioned in the syllabus may also be asked. Candidate's answers are expected to show their knowledge and intelligent understanding of the subject.
