🎓 Academic Libraries

Academic libraries serve universities, colleges, and research institutions:

  • India has over 25,000 colleges and 533 universities, each typically with its own library

  • Major academic libraries include:

    • Maulana Azad Library (Aligarh Muslim University)

    • Central Library (IITs, IIMs, AIIMS)

    • University of Delhi Central Library

  • Supported by UGC, INFLIBNET, and various consortia for digital access

🏫 School Libraries

According to UDISE Plus 2021–22 data:

  • India has approx. 14.89 lakh schools

  • Only 32,762 schools (≈2.2%) have digital libraries

    • Government schools: 1.2%

    • Govt-aided schools: 3.2%

    • Private unaided schools: 5.1%

  • Samagra Shiksha initiative promotes digital library infrastructure

🏠 Private Libraries

Private libraries range from personal collections to institutional setups:
