What is a Scientific Project

A scientific project is a study of a problem carried out with a objective of finding out a solution of the problem. It involves defining the problem, making the hypothesis, observation, collection of data through survey or experimentation, its analysis and then arriving at conclusion to find out the solution.

A scientific study paves the way for a practical solution of a vexed problem. The approach needs to be well planned and systematic otherwise errors may creep in, leading to aggravation of problem than to its solution. Jumping to quick and erroneous conclusions are considered to be unethical in scientific studies.

Evaluation Criteria

1. Originality of idea and concept:

A unique or novel project idea which attempts to answer a specific question - (a hypothesis driven by curiosity to understand any concept related to focal theme). The idea should not be an exact replication of model project as printed in the Activity Guide. A proper explanation of origin of the idea may be demanded by the evaluator.

2. Relevance of the project to the theme:

This section focuses on how the project is relevant to the focal theme/sub-theme.

3. Scientific understanding of the issue:

Refers to the extent of knowledge the child scientist has in relation to the project idea.

4. Data collection:

Systematic collection of information using relevant tools/interviews/questionnaire. Sample size should be sufficient to support the issues under study.

5. Analysis:

This includes tabulation, categorization/classification, and simple statistics as applicable to the study.

6. Experimentation/Scientific study/validation:

Conducting of experiments/field study and validation applying simple methods of science. Experiment need not be every sophisticated or lab based, they could be simple,self developed and inexpensive too.

7. Interpretation and Problem solving attempt:

To what extent the team has addressed the proposed hypothesis and the issue of the locality through the project.

8. Team work:

It refers to work division, cooperation and sharing among and beyond the team members (the child scientists).

9. Background correction (Only for District level):

In this case the background of the children is verified like geographical location of their school, village, town etc. in relation to infrastructure, information and other input related facilities available with them. The logic is that children from difficult geographical situation must get some weightage in comparison to the children from advantageous geographical location. Non-school going children should also get some weightage in this criterion

10. Report and Presentation:

Written Report and Oral Presentation are evaluated separately. Reports are evaluated for its systematic presentation, tabulation of data in support of the project idea and the clarity with which the study is documented and explained. A Log Book(actually a Daily Diary) is mandatory and should be authenticated over the signature of the guide teacher daily. The cover page of the Log Book should carry the names of the child scientists, the district and the Sate, in English. Marks awarded for the presentation covers question and answer with evaluators, presentation of charts/posters, illustrations and other visuals.

11. Follow up Action Plan (Only for State level):

The child scientists should try to find out scientific solution to the bothering problem. Has the team conveyed the message to the community? How it was communicated? Will effort continue to involve more people till the problem is solved? Was any action plan suggested? Credit shall be given for similar efforts.

12. Improvement from the previous level (Only for State level):

This is to encourage the child scientists towards their continuous involvement with the project for its improvement. Improvements on the work from District to state level and then from State level to the national level will be given marks separately. The evaluators shall specify the areas of improvement on a separate sheet of paper.

13. Additional page(s):

These must be there in the Project Report with detail description of works of improvement done after the previous level (particularly on the basis of the evaluators’ suggestion in the previous level).

How to do a good project

Make a group of like minded people numbering not more than five. They may belong to your school or your locality.

Discuss amongst your group the activity you all would like to do. It will be good and satisfying for you all if you take up a local specific issue. Community interaction and cooperation is also expected in all cases. Never select a project that does not give you satisfaction and scope for learning new things.

Depending upon the subject area chosen, now it is time to look for a guide. The person could be your teacher, experienced NCSC participant or any of your family member. Do not let the guide to work for your project. He/She has to be a path finder only.

Analyse the problem and make a work plan. Divide your responsibilities. It is good to discuss thequestionnaire, design of experiments, method of community interaction etc. amongst your group. Keep interacting with team member, guide teacher regularly. Do accept critical suggestions which improve outcome of your project.

Do not derive big conclusions as you are working in a small area with a small sample size. Do not generalise your observations/conclusions.

Create community awareness of about your findings and try finding out solutions. You may use media to focus attention of your authorities to help solving the problem, but first have discussions or give representations to the involved authority(ies).

Try finding ways and means of solving the problem by scientific inputs and community involvement. Keep proper records of your made by you and interest shown by them. This will not only help in making your project report but in the follow-up action with higher authorities/community.

If one strategy or solution does not work try finding out alternative. Do not give recommendations only. You must try implementing of at least a few suggested recommendations first.

You may not succeed in the efforts made to solve the problem but you should be able to find possible bottleneck in implementing your suggested strategy. Keep your record of them

Proper documentation will help you in presentation of your report. For writing the project report read the section on 'How to write a project report'.

You are supposed to present important findings or innovative procedures with the help of posters. Do not take help of any professional artist for the same. Each poster should be self contained. The posters should be well labeled giving title of project, participants. These posters not only help you while making presentation but also help other children who could not make participate during your presentation to understand and appreciate your work.

Note that in NCSC projects which are innovative (in idea or even methodology) only draw attention Do not spend money on video/audio recording, DTP of your presentation, making unnecessary slides. These display methods do not attract the evaluators.

You may spend money on

• developing some gadget, working model(s)
• material for awareness generation

The project which keep continuing even after completion of NCSC tenure for a particular year, are source of attraction of evaluators and community. Keep your state coordinators informed about such work even if you are above 17 and cease to be participant of NCSC.

CBSE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR SINGLE GIRL CHILD

1. Objective -The objective of CBSE merit scholarship scheme is to provide scholarships to the meritorious Single Girl Students, who are the only child of their parents; and have passed the CBSE Class X Examination with 60% / 6.2 CGPA or more marks/ grades and are continuing their further school education of Class XI and XII.

The scheme is aimed to recognize the efforts of the parents in promoting education among girls and to provide encouragement to meritorious students. As per the approval of the Competent Authority dated 23.07.2012, all children born together are Single Girl Child of their parents. 

2. Allocation of scholarship The number of scholarships for a particular year shall be variable and shall to awarded to all such "Single Girl Students" who have secured 60% / 6.2 CGPA or more marks / grades in the CBSE Class X Examination in that year. 

3. Eligibility criteria -The scholarship shall be given on the basis of merit list as stated in Para 2 above, from the result of CBSE Class X Examination. 

The eligibility criteria shall be as under: 

i) All Single Girl Students, who have secured 60% / 6.2 CGPA or more marks / grades in CBSE Class X Examination and are studying Class XI & XII in School (affiliated with CBSE) whose tuition fee is not more than Rs. 1,500/- p.m. during the academic year, shall be considered for the purpose. In the next two years, the total enhancement in tuition fee in such school shall not be more than 10% of the tuition fee charged. NOTE: NRI applicants of the Board are also eligible for the award. The tuition fee for the NRIs has been decided maximum of Rs. 6,000/- per month. 

ii) The scholarship shall be awarded to Indian Nationals only. 

iii) The student must continue her school studies in Class XI and XII in school as stated above in para 

3(i).v) Candidates who have passed CBSE Class X Examination in 2016 will be considered. 

v) A Scholar under the scheme while availing scholarship can enjoy other concession(s) given by the school in which she is studying other organization(s). 

Selection Procedure 

a) Student should have passed Class X Examination from the CBSE and secured 6.2 CGPA or more. 

b) Pursuing Class XI & XII from CBSE affiliated Schools. 

c) Student should be ONLY SINGLE GIRL CHILD of their parents. 

d) Original Affidavit duly attested by the First Class Judicial Magistrate/ SDM/ Executive Magistrate/Notary as per prescribed format available on the Board’s website. (Photocopy of Affidavit will not be accepted). 

e) Application form should be attested by the School Principal from where the student is pursuing Class XI after passing Class X from Board’s Examination. 

f) Tuition fee should not be more than ` 1,500/- per month in Class X and 10% enhancement for Class XI & XII. 

Duration of scholarship and its renewal-

i) The Scholarship awarded shall be renewed for a period of one year i.e. successful completion of class XI. Renewal shall also depend on promotion to the next class provided the scholar secures 50% or more marks in aggregate in the examination which determines her promotion to next class. 

ii) The renewal/ continuation of the scholarship, in cases where a scholar gives up the chosen course of study before its completion or if she changes the school or course of study shall be subject to prior approval of the Board. Good conduct and regularity in attendance are required for continuance of scholarship. The decision of the Board shall be final and binding in all such matters. A Scholarship once cancelled shall not be renewed under any circumstances.

Rate of Scholarships and mode of payment - The rate of scholarship shall be Rupees Five Hundred (` 500/-) per month. A Scholarship awarded under the scheme shall be paid for a maximum period of two years. Payment will be made through demand drafts/ECS.

How I can apply for scholarship

    CBSE awards scholarship under various schemes. Details of these along with eligibility are available in Guidelines and Application form page. Applicant 

    should ensure that he/she submits the application duly completed  in all respect before the last date.

What are the reasons of rejection of application?

    The rejection may be due to Application  not in proper format and non enclosure of relevant documents.

What is the definition of SGC (Single Girl Child) applicant?

    Single Girl child means a girl who is the only child of their parents and there is no brother or sisters.

I am single Girl in the family. I have one brother. Can I apply for scholarship under Single Girl Child Scheme?

    No, As per definition of Single Girl Children you will not be considered for scholarship under the scheme as single Girl child are those girl children whose

    parents have only one girl child and there is no other siblings. 

I have received a cheque which has date expiring today only. How can I get a valid cheque?

    Normally CBSE sends cheque through partner banks by post and chances of delay are not there. However in such a case you may send the cheque to

    CBSE scholarship branch for getting a valid cheque.

Whether i will require to apply for renewal of scholarship again?

    Yes, you have to apply for renewal separately.

The national award-winning 10-minute short film 

deals with child sexual abuse.

In the wake of cases about child sexual assault being reported 
in schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
 has asked schools to screen Komal, a 10-minute short film that 
deals with the topic of child sexual abuse.

A CBSE notification states that schools should ensure that every
 child views the “instructive and informative” film so that they
 are better equipped to help and protect themselves and their 
friends if such a situation arises. The animated short film by 
the Ministry of Women and Child Development, made with 
support from Childline, has won the national film award under 
the “best educational film” category.

Many school managements, who have already begun classes 
on good touch and bad touch and gender sensitization issues, 
have welcomed the move and said that it could be used as a 
tool to supplement these programmes. They also said that the

Dear Sir/ Madam,

As you might be aware that 'Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research' (INSPIRE) scheme is one of the flagship programme of Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India.

The scheme covers students in the age group of 10-32 years and has five components.

The first component, INSPIRE Award - MANAK (Million Minds Augmenting National Aspirations and Knowledge) is being executed by National Innovation Foundation – India (NIF) aims to motivate students in the age group of 10-15 years and studying in classes 6 to 10, to pursue Science and a Career in Research. 

The scheme is aligned with the Action Plan for "Start-up India" initiative launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India.

The objective of the scheme is to target one million original ideas/innovations rooted in science and societal applications to foster a culture of creativity and innovative thinking among school children. This will help address the societal needs through science and technology and nurture them to become sensitive and responsible citizens and innovation leaders of tomorrow.

Under this scheme student may submit innovative ideas / innovations through schools in any Indian language and the best 1 lakh ideas/projects will receive Rs. 10,000/- per student through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) and get a chance to participate in District Level Competition. 

Ten per cent students will be shortlisted further to participate at State level Competition.

One thousand students will showcase their innovations at National level and finally, sixty innovative projects will be incubated completely (patent filing, value addition in technology and product development etc.) by NIF and will be displayed at Festival of Innovation (FOIN) at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. 

The most active schools and teachers will receive a certificate of appreciation.

The schools may submit students ideas/innovations in prescribed format on E-MIAS (http://www.inspireawards-dst.gov.in)

I request you to please organize an idea/innovation competition in your schools and submit best of 2 to 3 ideas/innovations immediately. I am looking forward for your active participation.
