12 अगस्त को भारत में राष्ट्रीय पुस्तकालय दिवस के रूप में चिह्नित किया गया है।

डॉ. एसआर रंगनाथन, जिन्हें भारत में पुस्तकालय विज्ञान के जनक के रूप में जाना जाता है, का जन्मदिन भारत में हर साल राष्ट्रीय पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

वह बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय (1945-47) में एक विश्वविद्यालय पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष और पुस्तकालय विज्ञान के प्रोफेसर और दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय (1947-55) में पुस्तकालय विज्ञान के प्रोफेसर थे।

वे 1944 से 1953 तक भारतीय पुस्तकालय संघ के अध्यक्ष रहे।

1957 में उन्हें सूचना और प्रलेखन के लिए अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संघ (FID) का संमानित सदस्य चुना गया और उन्हें ग्रेट ब्रिटेन के पुस्तकालय संघ के कार्यकाल के लिए उपाध्यक्ष बनाया गया।
